This book is cleverly written to show how grief affects everyone - including the animals in a family. It has many subtle subtexts running through it and brings up the issues of why we would or wouldn't keep pets; what happens to pets when their owners die; how depression, which can follow a tragedy, affects everyone and everything associated with that person; how when animals or people including children are neglected, they turn into unknown creatures which are often "lean and mean". It is a wonderful book to use when working in process drama to develop tolerance, empathy and understandings of how others think and react in specific situations. It is also a superb text to motivate writing, especially if used in conjunction with process drama and working in role.
