Starkly written, richly provocative, Shipwrecks is a profound and haunting novel about human fate set in medieval Japan. Isaku is a nine-year-old boy living in a remote, desperately poor fishing village. Forced to grow up before his time, Isaku must confront a number of enigmas, not the least of which is his own nascent sexuality and the secret behind the legend of O-fune-sama--the ships that founder on the shore, bringing manna to the village like a gift from heaven.
