A book should have a beginning, middle and end. This story peters out on page 346 without any conclusion. While the Emma character is fun, the prose evocative, dangling the reader at the end is mean spirited. If you're writing a trilogy, call it that. Otherwise, a novel should be able to stand on its own (ie: Janet Evanovich) without the reader desperate for the next installment. As with the last Richard Jury novel (in which Grimes gives thoughts and actions to a cat and a dog -- which ruined the series for me), I'm very disappointed by this book.

I have read this book twice and will read it again it is very entertaining. After reading Belle Ruin , I then had to read the previous books. They were good too. I bought this book on Alibris at a bargain after reading it at the library. It is the best of the author's works in my opinion.
