The story of life in a dustman's family 30 years ago. Mr and Mrs Ruggles had four boys and three girls, who all had different ways of enjoying themselves, almost none of which needed any money, which was just as well because their mother had to take in washing to help pay the bills.

A great story for young kids that helps us remember those hard days of post war Britain, when life was hard for many and yet still much more innocent than it is today. Great find, well written and an easy read.

Working-class fun
Charming book tells the story of the Ruggles, a poor, working class family in England between the wars. The parents both work - the father is a dustman and the mother takes in laundry. Each of the 7 children has his or her own chapter and own adventure, and the novel ends with a wonderful and funny holiday excursion.
The author, Eve Garnett, wrote the story as an alternative to most British children's fiction, which was dominated by middle-class kids and values at the time. In many ways, this book reminds me of Sydney Taylor's "All of a Kind Family", with the same quiet pleasures and crowded-but-happy family life. Try to find an edition that includes Garnett's own illustrations (the Puffin imprint has them).
