This book is long and does start off a bit slow. Don't let that scare you away from a wonderful coming of age book.
The main character is a 12 year old boy that must work through his pain of losing his father and having to watch his mother waste away due to cancer.
Take all of this and then add that his father's business partner is causing the pain.
Take the time to learn the whole story, you won't be sorry.

Good, a little srange, odd in a good way
After a slow start the book is a roller coaster, when you read "Dark House" everything comes together.

exciting, imaginative!
I have actually gone thru several paperback copies of this book, worn them right out! I read it the first time many years ago and its the one book that made me a Stephen King fan. It is engaging, exciting, hopeful, tearful at times, but more than that, its imaginations gone wild! The main theme is a young boy, on a journey to save is mother's life, finding his strength, bravery, and most of all, that our world is not what he ever thought. There are more worlds than ever imagined!

Awful Book By King
I will start by saying that I have enjoyed many Stephen King novels, including the Dark Tower series that seems to be mentioned in unison with this book. However, this is one of the worst books I have read to date, by any author. Nearly nothing happens in the first 200 pages, or at least not anything that could not have been condensed (minus excessive, boring explanation) into 50 pages or less. Jack is an extremely boring lead character with little depth to him. The characters around him give him his only depth. Considering Jack is alone for the most part makes the book unbearably slow. The individual events that take place are told in an odd fashion, such as you do not know whether he is referring to the present or past of the scenario in any one passage. Perhaps if the authors had condensed the book to about 300 pages the book would have been more readable, as is it is long-winded drivel. Certainly, in my opinion, the worst Stephen King book.

Another Great book.
If you want an original, throught provoking, spooky, and adventurous book, then read this one. First off when two Masters writers get together to write a story you know It'll be good. This book I would consider a horror/fantasy! Read this book.
