To A God Unknown is John Sreinbeck's 2nd novel which begins to set the course for the familiar California back drop in much of Steinbeck's work. This novel surges deep into man's struggle between faith in a greater power and the forces of nature. As with many of Steinbeck's novels, To A God Unknown is layered with multiple relationships between characters and times of trial in their lives. The central character, Joseph, not only struggles with generations of family, but with "pagan" beliefs and natural disaster as he attempts to keep his farm properous and thriving. This is a very nice read for those who enjoy Steinbeck as there are many hints of his later work throughout the story.
