The Guildhall Museum, established in 1826 by the Corporation of London, was one of the oldest museums in the country specializing in the collection of antiquities, chiefly archaeological, relating to the small area of the City itself. In 1911, however, a pushy rival appeared, the London Museum, which concerned itself with the whole of London and with its history in all periods. It was set up under powerful aristocratic auspices, supported by royal patronage and privately financed in some mysterious and hitherto unexplained way.
