In 1992, an Indian climber was left to die on the South Col of Mount Everest by other climbers who watched his feebly waving hand from their tent. He was filmed in his last hours for a television feature. Why did onlookers not hold the dying man's hand and comfort him? The answer appals Joe Simpson, who was himself left for dead in a cervasse in Peru in 1985 - 'because it might compromise their summit bid'. It is an ethical question that Joe is forced to confront as he climbs a hazardous route on Pumori. Now that Everest has become the playground of the rich, where commercial operators offer guided tours to the top, camping admist the detritus and unburied corpses of previous less fortunate climbers, Joe wonders if the noble instincts that once characterised mountaineering have been irrevocably displaced - as in politics, in business, in the media and in other facets of society.

Very Good. In 1992, a climber was left to die by other climbers on Mount Everest, which horrified Joe Simpson who was himself left for dead in Peru in 1985. In this book Simpson explores anecdotally and in heated debates with his climbing companions on Pumori, the moral climate of mountaineering in the 1990s. Num Pages: 208 pages, 8pp colour and 8pp b&w illustrations. BIC Classification: BTP; DNF; WSZG. Category: (G) General (US: Trade). Dimension: 197 x 131 x 15. Weight in Grams: 180. Good clean copy with some minor shelf wear. 1998. UK ed. Paperback.....We ship daily from our Bookshop.
"Dark Shadows Falling" is Joe Simpson's commentary on the state of neglect, or irreverence, of the world's mountains. While parts are compelling, and the issues addressed are valid, Simpson loses his way at times and devolves into rants that get tiring after a while.
Nonetheless, it is a quick read, and is worth a quick read for those looking for a climber's view on the dark side of mountaineering.
