Josephine Tey, one of the Golden Age mystery writers, had a much smaller output than the other great writers and each book is set in a different arena with very different subjects but her detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks usually (not always) appears somewhere in the story to tackle the crime. Very special writer.

To Love and Be Wise
I read this years ago and didn't much care for it, loaned it out and never got it back. I toyed with getting a replacement copy for years because now it was now the only Josephine Tey that I didn't have. I finally did, and I re-read it, and I now like it very much.
I can very highly recommend any of Josephine Tey's mysteries. They are all very well-written and well-plotted with well-developed characters. I'm glad that I finally replaced it and read it again.

Not my favourite Josephine Tey book, but still I would read it again (and again!). In fact this must be at least the third or fourth time. Inspector Grant is the epitome of intelligent policing, and always beautifully well-mannered. Although the books are firmly fixed in the early to middle twentieth century, the insights into character are as vivid and true today as then. So glad I have my own copy!

Subtle and sophisticated
Ms. Tey had such warmth and style - if only she lived to grow with this gift. There is true plot here, vivid characterization - I feel a closeness with her after each of her novels.
