Actual rating: 4.5 but I'll round up because I love this world, it's amazing.
solid crazy weird YA fantasy with some monumental worldbuilding from Clive Barker. I'd honestly describe this whimsical, delightfully insane world he builds in this novel as Dr. Seuss meets H.P. Lovecraft a little. It's compelling, it's wacky, and it has a pretty great story to boot, with some fairly one-dimensional, but simple and enjoyable characters. The worldbuilding really had me hooked from the beginning, with Abarat being such a well-detailed, surreal and phantasmagorical world that really pulls out that child-like imagination from a reader of any age.
The main reason I would not give it a full 5 stars, is because of the absolute lack of resolution or any feeling of finality. At the end of the novel you're left very obviously feeling like this was a part of a larger whole, rather than an ending that allows room for the story to continue on and still feel satisfying. I genuinely did not expect the ending of the audiobook when it happened. There's really no other resolution at the end aside from our protag getting away from the baddies, which happens a lot. It leaves a bit to be desired, and I think could have been done in a less abrupt way.
