Great read. Again the book came quickly and in perfect condition. I love Isabel Allende. Her characters and situations are totally involving. Hard to put down. You don't have to know all about her to appreciate this, but if you do know, you will see some of her in the character of Ines.

Powerful
This work of historical fiction about the founding of Chile by conquistador Pedro de Valdivia and his lover, Ines Suarez was excellent. Written in the first person as a story told by an aged Suarez to her daughter, it weaves an exciting story of the hardships of the founding of South American countries during the time of Francisco Pizarro in Peru. The natives are fearsome warriors, but the cruel treatment and abuses of them by the Spaniards is not sugar coated. The many loves of her life are chronicled and the privations they faced at times almost killed the fledgling colony. I saw Chile in a new light. I would love to go to Santiago or Valdivia to learn more about their history.
