Rudolf Flesch (1911 - 1986), the author of this book, was born in Vienna, Austria and managed to emigrate to America before the Nazis took over his country. In America, he became an authority on illiteracy. He maintained that it was important for children to be taught to read through phonics - the sounds of letters. English, he said, was the only alphabetic language not taught through phonics, and he thought this was the reason for widespread illiteracy in America in his days. He did not think much of the look-and-say method of teaching children to read.
Flesch wrote many books on reading, writing and communicating. I think this book, first published in 1955, and its sequel ''Why Johny still can't Read', which appeared over twenty years later, are two of his best - educative, informative and inspiring.
