McBrien does a good job of telling you what the early popes didn't do and then highlights the things done by popes that support his premise that the papacy needs to be reinvented. While many of the facts he provides are valuable, the underlying premise and the reconstruction of history make this great pulp material but not as valuable as one would hope for professional use.
