Faith and Religion - not the same
For those familiar with Ellul this book will be one of your religious favorites. In it he dissects the difference between the Faith that stands before God who is mystery and who reveals him/herself in the life of Jesus of Nazareth and the religion that has grown up around this Faith but which, as he says, never produces the Faith that is without condition in this God.
He points out that religion never leads to Faith but Faith may degenerate into religion or religious observance and religiosity - which it does and which dominates the conversation about Faith.
This book is not for the faint of heart and not for those who need certainty - since neither of these are part of Ellul's Faith where doubt contributes to Faith as fuel to fire.
