From the author's personal standpoint, to the historical research that made Winchester so repected, this book gives the history of this tragic region of Europe. Written shortly after the Balkan Wars, Winchester delves into the history of Serbs, Slovaks, Yugoslavs, and the long memory of those who live in the region.
The book cries out for an index, but is otherwise a fine addition to any library.

An extraordinary combination of talents
Simon Winchester has an impeccable pedegree as a storyteller and writer. His ability to communicate with his audience is unquestionable. The fact that he is able to visit and re visit the places he writes about gives wonderful depth and individualism to all of his works. The carefully crafted and meticulousy researched text is a delight to read. One is educated and entertained simultaneously. The authors ability and obvious respect for his sources of academic and historical detail shines through the pages.
