In spite of the ambiance of misery and depredation lived by most of the characters in this fascinating novel, there is a balancing theme of courage and optimism. The prostitutes of the Columbian jungle town are made lovable, even honorable, in important ways. The heroine and her substitute mother/mentor are truly memorable for their wit , wisdom and self knowledge . As for the male characters, one really becomes sympathetic with the oil workers, whose once-a-month encounters with the 'putas' are more like love trysts than mere sexual encounters. If ever heartbreak and hopelessness were metamorphized into joy and triumph, Laura Restrepo has worked that magic in "The DarK Bride"
