The title of this book is a little misleading. I thought that it would be more about the music itself. Instead, it is about the people (primarily publishers) who created and published American rags. That said, this is a well researched and well written book. It is an easy read that examines virtually every known US publisher of ragtime music, state by state. The appendices, which listed all known rags, their dates, composers, publishers, and locations, were particularly enlightening. By the time I'd finished the book I had a much better understanding of the origins and growth of ragtime and the affect that it had on American culture of the time. Recommended.
