I'm not normally a fan of adventure books with a lot of suffering and grave doubts as to whether the hero will live through it. But I had a family member who was a ship's officer on one of the ship convoys going around the North Cape of Norway to deliver arms to Russia in World War Two, so I had a personal interest in knowing what it was about and what it was like. This book recreates it remarkably well, and is very useful for understanding naval history of the war.

A Harrowing Read
This has been a favourite book of mine since I first read it in the early 1970's. It is a thumping good novel that harrowingly depicts the horror and terror suffered by those very brave sailors on the Russian relief convoys in the freezing sub-Arctic waters during the Second World War. It is a classic, and I would say MacLeans very best story. It should have been a blockbuster film! Anybody with an interest in the war and the sea cannot but fail to 'enjoy' this story, but be prepared to come out of your warm comfort zone - it's worth it. A testimony to those very brave men in the Royal Navy.
