Lange Zeit galt Dmitri Schostakowitsch als linientreuer Staatskünstler, bis seine von Solomon Volkow aufgezeichneten und im Westen herausgegebenen Memoiren dieses Erscheinungsbild in Zweifel zogen. Die vorliegende Untersuchung will aufzeigen, wie verschiedene Kommentatoren die Musik dieses Komponisten aus der Sicht ihres jeweiligen politischen Systems be-beziehungsweise verurteilt haben. Dabei werden Bezüge zwischen Werk und den 'Memoiren' aufgedeckt. Insbesondere sein Schaffen während der Stalin-Ära entsprach nicht der Realismus-Doktrin und war nicht anachronistisch. Seine von Humanität und Wahrung der menschlichen Würde gegenüber Macht und Gewalt geprägte Musiksprache kleidete Schostakowitsch lediglich in eine den politischen Verhältnissen angepaßte Form.
