For 1970 work with the Chicago Sun-Times he won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography citing "dramatic and sensitive photographs at the Lincoln and Dixon State Schools for the Retarded in Illinois." He began his career at the Chicago Tribune, and the Chicago Sun-Times before moving to Arizona, where he joined the Arizona Daily Star and taught at the University of Arizona. Dykinga left photojournalism in 1985. He started to work on a book about the Sonoran Desert. The publication of The Sonoran Desert launched his career as a nature and conservation photographer. Of one of Bowden s books, Frog Mountain Blues, New York Times book reviewer Emerson Trout wrote: "His prose trembles with a raw and vital energy that I find missing from much of the current writing about the vital questions of wildness and wilderness." Wayne Ranney is a geologist, author and guide. He strives to share his appreciation of the earth and its geologic history with anyone who is curious about landscapes and how they might have formed. In 2000, he participated in the Symposium on the Origin of the Colorado River that included more than 70 geologists. His book, Carving Grand Canyon, won the Glyph Award in the Best Science category from the Arizona Book Publishing Association and honorable mention from the National Outdoor Book Awards.
