Seller's Description:
Very Good in Very Good jacket. Size: 4to-over 9.75"-12" tall; 1st Edition, hardcover in dark blue textured paper boards with gilt title on spine. The lower spine end is lightly rubbed, but tips remain sharp. 119pp glossy text is tight, crisp, and fresh-smelling with some handling soil from page turning. End pps starting to fox. No writing or highlighting. Not Exlib. Original dj is unclipped, with a tiny closed tear on the gutter, but displays well in new mylar. The silver box has fascinated and intrigued collectors for many centuries. This book is a comprehensive study of the subject which concentrates on the development of the silver box in England from the 16th to the late 19th centuries. Because the interest of collectors lies not so much in the shape or type of boxes as in the wide variety of uses to which they have been put and the splendid enrichment lavished upon them, there is a penetrating analysis of the roots and derivations of ornament. The full color illustrations show boxes with as many diverse forms and uses as possible.
