Mojzes, a Protestant Yugoslavian-American, analyses the issues surrounding the demise of Yugoslavia and the ensuing warfare, drawing on his travels in the region and interviews with politicians, scholars, and religious leaders. Mojzes, a scholar of religion in Eastern Europe, has found fertile ground in tackling the horrendous conflict engulfing the former Yugoslavia. The aim of this well-organized book is to explain the roots of the fratricidal war. Mojzes treats the history of the region along with the myths both sides use to justify their respective nationalisms. In doing so, he weaves together religious and economic motives to paint a broad picture of the unbridled disregard for humanity that has cost hundreds of thousands of lives. An ethnic Croat, he does not conceal his disappointment and frustration at what has become of his former homeland. His conclusion offers a proposal for ending the conflict that comes across as a cry in the wilderness in view of the international community's feckless response to the raping and carnage.
