This book is based partly on a narrative text prepared by the author for an exhibition of photographs and documents entitled "The Marshall Plan: Cooperating to Rebuild Europe, " to be on display in U. S. history museums and Presidential libraries from 1987 to 1989. Both exhibition and book were commissioned by the German Marshall Fund of the Untied States as part of a tribute to the Marshall Plan on its fortieth anniversary.
