Michael Lee Lanning (born September 18, 1946) is the author of military nonfiction. In 1968, Lanning was commissioned a second lieutenant and received infantry, airborne, and ranger training. After a tour as a platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC, he reported to Vietnam where he served as an infantry platoon leader, reconnaissance platoon leader, and rifle company commander in the 2d Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment 199th Light Infantry Brigade. He served as an instructor in the U.S. Army Ranger School, a mechanized infantry company commander in the 3rd Infantry Division, and in the 1st Cavalry Division. Ray W. Stubbe served as a chaplain from 1955-1961 and again from 1963-1984. He served with the 1st Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division during the siege at Khe Sanh (January-March 1968). The Force Recon Marines provided senior headquarters with the intelligence vital for operations-planning, and alerting it to offensive buildups by the enemy. At the same time, the patrols often produced body counts far greater than much larger units. Their more notable operations were marked by close combat, extraordinary bravery, and nearly unbelievable survival despite overwhelming odds. Force Recon companies were the eyes and ears of the Marine Corps in Vietnam. Classified as special operations capable, Force Recon Marines ventured into the enemy's backyard to conduct reconnaissance and launched deliberate strikes against the enemy. Lanning and Stubbe blend analysis and you-are-there stories of Force Recon in action to create the definitive account of Recon Marines.
