Hood was on of the Englishmen who ventured our to seek the Northwest Passage on the first Franklin expedition. He was one of those who died on that voyage, however, he "kept a remarkable and invaluable record, in words and paintings" of the expedition. Dust jacket has edge chips; the book's free endpaper is clipped on the top corned; book has slight musty odor.

"Hood's journal, less formal and more lively than Franklin's official account, shows his appreciation of the beauty as well as the harshness of his surroundings and an awareness, unusual in his time, of some of the adverse effects on the native peoples and their environment of the coming of Europeans." Hood's travels took him across what is now northern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, and the Northwest Territories.
