Tall tales and true from the Peter Badcoe Club, 1ALSG, Back Beach, Vung Tau, South Vietnam. For 6 years the defining elements of Australian youth of the 1960s & 1970s (the Vietnam War, surfing and rock'n'roll) came together on a wide beach in South Vietnam. The Army built a clubhouse so the troops could stow their weapons, have a hot shower, change into civvies, and enjoy a burger and beer with mates. It also provided the surfboards, and fortified the beach with barbed wire and machine gun emplacements. This was Australia's own surfing enclave on the South China Sea-the Viet Cong-aka the VC or Victor Charlie, or just plain Charlie-most definitely didn't surf there.
