Baron von Hugels journal of his time in Swan River, Van Diemens Land, Norfolk Island and New South Wales in 1833-4 translated into English for the first time. Von Hugel was an Australian diplomat. He records encounters with convicts and ex-convicts, bushrangers, shanty-keepers, and common folk as well as hobnobbing with notables wherever he went. His observations of Australian plates greatly influenced Ferdinand von Mueller.
