Seller's Description:
New in new dust jacket. 266 p. Audience: General/trade. New pristine copy in perfect dust jacket, includes two disks of sample sounds in pocket at rear of book, as issued. An in-depth technical analysis of the relationship between colors and sounds, and the use of musical timbre as a fundamental element in the building of musical structures. Includes several diagrams to help explain points. Wayne Slawson is a composer and associate professor of music at the University of Pittsburgh and has published experimental articles on the perception of vocal timbre. His book Sound Color--chosen for the first Outstanding Publication Award of the Society for Music Theory--is conceived primarily as a guide to composers and as a contribution to music theory, and is addressed only secondarily to hearing scientists. It draws, nonetheless, very heavily from, and attempts to synthesize for the musician, the scientific literature on spectral envelope perception from the perspectives of auditory physiology, psychoacoustics, and speech and cognitive sciences, while trying to maintain a practical perspective: that these considerations are supposed to help the contemporary composer ply his or her trade. The level is appropriate for graduate seminars in composition or music psychology.
