John Pimlott (1948, Brigg? 24 October 1997, Surrey) was the Head of the Department of War Studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, also known as a prolific author of books on 20th century military history. He received a Ph.D. for a thesis on the administration of the British Army between 1783 and 1793. He is best known for editing books on 20th century military history. The subject matter of his books covers the conflicts of the First and Second World Wars, the conflicts in the Middle East and the Vietnam War, specifically focusing on the guerrilla warfare aspects of this conflict. His works include illustrated books as War in Peace (London: Marshall Cavendish, 1987), Nam: The Vietnam Experience 1965? 75, Vietnam: The History and Tactics (New York: Crescent Books, 1982), Battle of the Bulge or Guerrilla Warfare. Dr. Pimlott died in a tragic accident when two grenades picked up during a visit to a battlefield site exploded in his studio in Surrey. Leading authorities from the United States and Britain critically analyze American involvement in Vietnam since 1960, drawing attention to political situations as well as military operations and tactics. The book, though relatively short, provides an introduction to the 30-some years of war in Vietnam, beginning with the French and its Indochina colony. It concentrates on U.S. involvement from the late 1950s until withdrawal in 1975 and on military strategy and tactics during this period. There are more than 200 photo illustrations and maps, 75 in full color, as well as a brief bibliography and index. Chaplain Donald R. Crowther--taken from the author's 2006 letter to the Nioshba Valley Voice: I entered the Army at Fort Devens, went to Korea (1952-1953), returned to Ft. Devens and on to Ft. Hood, Texas. I was honorably discharged, went on to undergraduate studies and graduate studies in the Midwest. I returned to the Army as a chaplain, which took me to Vietnam (March 1968-1969) and then a two-year assignment at Ft. Devens. New assignment took me to Germany. While still at Ft. Devens, I became aware of the rights of the individual soldier. We live in a democratic society. This requires continuous vigilance, take nothing for granted. Please respect that the Army geographical locations in our nation are posts, not bases. There is a difference? tradition still stands. The author reached the rank of Major and was retired at the time he wrote to the newspaper.
