Very Good. 12mo-over 6¾"-7¾" tall. 0.8 cm Round Gouge in Spine Joint to Front Cover; Book Slightly Warped; Light Creasing on Front Cover; Front, Rear Covers, Spine Lightly Chipped; Heavy Yellowing Due to Age. SUB-TITLE: Two Narratives. COVER DESIGN BY: Cooper Thirkell. CONTENTS: Author's Foreword; Prologue to an Autobiography; The Crocodiles of Yamoussoukro. SYNOPSIS: "It is now nearly thirty years since...on smooth, 'non-rustle' BBC script paper, I wrote the first sentence of my first publishable book..." Finding the Centre contains all the irony, instinct and brilliance we would expect from V. S. Naipaul, but never before has he written about himself, the process and the magic of writing with such sustained and engaging intimacy. The two 'personal narrative pieces' in this book both involve journeys. In the first, Naipaul goes back to Trinidad, to his childhood, his family and particularly his father, in search of his roots as a writer. In the second, he describes his exploration of Black Africa and African magic on the Ivory Coast and, in doing so, demonstrates how far his writing grows out of exposure to other people, and other states of mind. V. S. Naipaul was born in Trinidad in 1932. He came to England in 1950 to do a university course and began to write, in London, in 1954. He has followed no other profession. He is the author of The Mystic Masseur (1957; John Llewelyn Rhys Memorial Prize), The Suffrage of Elvira (1958), Miguel Street (1959; Somerset Maugham Award), A House for Mr Biswas (1961), Mr. Stone and the Knights Companion (1963; Hawthornden Prize) and The Mimic Men (1967; W. H. Smith Award, 1968). A Flag on the Island (1967), a collection of short stories, was followed by The Loss of El Dorado (1969) and three novels, In a Free State (1971; Booker Prize), Guerrillas (1975) and A Bend in the River (1979). In 1960 he began to travel. The Middle Passage (1962) records his impressions of colonial society in the West Indies and South America. An Area of Darkness (1964) is a reflective and semi-autobiographical account of a year in India. The Overcrowded Barracoon (1972) is a selection of his longer essays, and India: A Wounded Civilization (1977) is an extended study--prompted by the 1975 emergency--of Indian attitudes. The Return of Eva Peron with The Killings in Trinidad (1980) contains studies of Argentina, the Congo and the Michael X killings, and Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey (1981) is the result of seven months' travel in 1979 and 1980 in Iran, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia.
