Useni Eugene Perkins is nationally recognized for his writings that focus on youth and youth issues. Historian and writer Lerone Bennett, Jr. cited Perkins' book Home Is a Dirty Street: The Social Oppressions of Black Children as one of the most important books on the sociology of the streets since the publication of Black Metropolis. Other notable books by Perkins include Harvesting New Generations: The Positive Development of Black Youth, Explosion of Chicago's Black Street Gangs: 1970 to Present, and Afrocentric Self-Discovery Workbook for Black Youth. He is also publisher and editor of "Black Child Journal" and editor of "Successful Black Parenting Magazine." Perkins has authored twenty-five plays, including six children's musicals and in 1999 he was inducted into the Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent in Chicago. See less
