Lyn Alexander has practised as a small-animal veterinarian since graduating in 1977 from the Ontario Veterinary College at Guelph. This was a second career, having resigned a commission in the Royal Canadian Air Force after fifteen years of regular service. Lyn Alexander has practised as a small-animal veterinarian since graduating in 1977 from the Ontario Veterinary College at Guelph. This was a second career, having resigned a commission in the Royal Canadian Air Force after fifteen years of regular service. She has earned two university degrees, Batchelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. In 2009 after 33 years in veterinary practice she retired to a life of country leisure. Lyn has travelled from coast to coast in Canada and the United States, and while serving with the RCAF also saw much of Western Europe. One of the most powerful experiences in her life was a tour of duty with NATO from 1954 to 1956, beginning scarcely nine years after the end of World War Two, when she made several friends among the former enemy. One was Barbara Skuhra, a German girl who had lived through the war in Baden-Baden and survived the awful conditions following the German defeat. Together they saw much of the Black Forest region by bicycle, and attended concerts in Heidelberg and at the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden. Another friend was Frau Lucie Rommel, the widow of Field Marshal Rommel, whom she visited several times for coffee. Between these two women, Lyn found her eyes and heart opened to the terrible tragedy of ordinary and extraordinary Germans during World War Two. Today most of her days are taken up with writing.
