Couture is an attitude--a non-complex way of thinking about sewing. It's about concepts--how to approach a technique, or a way of accomplishing a particular look. In this book, Carr expresses her philosophy--that there is no one way to do anything in couture sewing--and discusses alternative techniques. Illustrations and photos throughout.

Roberta Carr, author, and Pati Palmer, editor, are extraordinarily gifted. They have produced this book as a concise reference on how to add beautiful details to your clothing. It's full of so many different bits of information, like how to make a collar roll - I never knew there was a way to make steaming a jacket collar roll perfectly in place.
There are lots of details about piping, tubing, grainlines, etc. as you would expect, but there's always something extra in the information that's not very well known. Example: there's lots of books that describe bound button holes, but not many that give clear instructions on how to finish the facing behind those buttonholes, not just one at a time but all of them along a line of buttonholes. Much needed info to shorten the time to make something beautiful.
One bit of advice - even though the clothing examples are soooo 80's, ignore the style and look for the content.
Great book, good illustrations, doesn't take long to look up what you need when you need it. Good for beginners because of the clean illustrations and clear instructions. A beginner sewist may not need the information in this book for their first few projects, but these details pop up quite frequently and it's best to know how to make them look right. Commercial patterns don't always describe the best way to create the details. And if you're like me, you don't want to spend your time reading, you just want to soak in the diagrams first, then read what you need.
