Jeff Karp , Ph.D., is a biomedical innovator and bioinspirationalist at Harvard Medical School and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors who has dedicated his highly multidisciplinary and multicultural laboratory to evolving a process for rapid medical problem solving. Technologies developed in his lab have led to multiple products currently in development or on the market and for the launch of ten companies. Karp is the Distinguished Chair in Clinical Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine and Professor of Anesthesia at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is also a principal faculty member at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and an affiliate faculty member at the Broad Institute and at MIT through the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed papers (with 55 in high impact journals including Nature, Science, and Cell journals), has given over 300 invited lectures, and holds more than 100 issued or pending national and international patents. His lab's technologies include a drug treatment for the most common form of hearing loss, a tissue glue that can seal holes inside a beating heart, targeted therapy for osteoarthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, needles that automatically stop when they reach their target, a once a day nasal spray to prevent respiratory infections, and immunotherapy approaches to annihilate cancer. In addition to his research goals, Karp is dedicated to developing the careers of the next generation of medical innovators, and was selected as the Outstanding Faculty Undergraduate Mentor among all faculty at MIT and he received the HST McMahon Mentoring award for being the top mentor of Harvard-MIT students. Dr. Karp lives in Brookline, Massachusetts, with his wife, son, daughter, and two Cavalier King Charles spaniels. Teresa Barker is a nonfiction book writer and former journalist with a lifelong affinity for the outdoors, wildlife, and the plant world.
