His teaching career spanned more than forty years, with his most mature years spent at Tubingen. In an age when liberal scholarship carried the day, Schlatter stood firm in his advocacy of a conservative approach to biblical interpretation and theology. He was convinced that biblical exegesis was the only proper foundation for systematic theology, and in this respect anticipated and influenced Karl Barth. Andreas J.
