As far as first books in series go, Turning Point was not very engaging or impressively written. I consider it a very good thing I caught sight of Fortune's Wheel at a book store and THAT was my first introduction to the wonderful Sholan Alliance series. Lisanne Norman had clearly not found her stride yet, and her writing style and characterization skills vastly improved by Fortune's Wheel. Volume 2 explains pretty much all the events of Turning Point as well as reintroduces all the characters of Vol. 1, so you will not find yourself lost if you skip ahead. This is one of the best Sci Fi series I have ever read, but I worry many readers will be turned off by this lackluster first volume, so please take my advice and just skip it.
