Yes, that's right, this is the only book in the Sholan Alliance series (besides Turning Point which I prefer to pretend doesn't exist) to be given less than 5 stars. Why? For one thing, after the first couple of chapters the book reverts back to a plot device used in Dark Nadir, wherein most of the story takes place in the confines of a space ship, or in this case a massive mobile space station carrying an entire colony of Valtegans. However, Norman does not manage to pull off what she did in Dark Nadir, which was to keep the story interesting in spite of it taking place within a relatively small environment. In fact, even though the characters have a much larger amount of space to move around in, there actually seems to be a lot less happening than in Dark Nadir. The book suffers from extremely slow spots and what feels like the characters repeating the same actions way too many times with very little variations. Kusac's visits with his son are a good example - while put in to induce character development and build a relationship between the two, these encounters (which are far too numerous) feel like some kind of forced routine that does nothing to make us feel attached to the characters. Basically, they don't fulfill their intended purpose and end up needlessly taking up space in the book as a result. To sum up, Between Darkness and Light is the one book in this series that you are going to have to force yourself to read. Important events do occur in the book, so I can't advise just skipping it, but the amount of unnecessary stuff you will have to plod through to get to these events makes reading through this (long) book a chore rather than a pleasure. Many good series have a subpar book along the way, and Between Darkness and Light is that book for the Sholan Alliance series.

Good filler of past events to current
The 7th installment of this series is a great filler of past and current events to the reader of the Shola world. The main characters interact with each in a more centralized story.
