This novel is set just prior to the Civil War, and for soon to be graduate from West Point, Cadet Quince St. Clair, is given an assignment in secrecy that sends him thousands of miles west. He is to go undercover in an attempt to help hold California and Oregon for the Union, if and when the war breaks out. Leaving behind a sweetheart is never easy and he wonders how Glorianna Holland will react when he tells here he is leaving because he had been caught in an infraction of the rules bringing immediate dismissal from West Point--that was the cover story which would be spread through out the army community--in effect cutting him off completely from anyone and any help.
