You hear so much about how frivolous, how profligate, how nasty Marie Antoinette was, that it was truly enlightening to read this very well-researched, balanced biography and see her in the context of her time and place. Carolly Erickson gives us neither angel nor devil, but a complete, real woman, virtues, vices and all. Perhaps some of us would not do so well, for in spite of her many unwise decisions, she emerges from history with more dignity and poise than I had previously imagined. An absorbing read, as much fun as a novel - only better!
