Carolly Erickson gives us neither angel nor devil, but a complete, real woman, virtues, vices and all. Perhaps some of us would not do so well, for in spite of her many unwise decisions, she emerges from history with more dignity and poise than I had previously imagined. An absorbing read, as much fun as a novel - only better!
