This story stems directly from the author's experience as an ambulance driver during World War I. It shows how the war destroys Fuselli, Chrisfield and Andrews, men whose variable attitude to the conflict does little to differentiate their fate. Dos Passos also wrote the novel, "USA".

Interesting and good read of an enlisted mans point of view of WWI. Reminds me a bit of "Good solider Svek" without the humor.

best novel i've read in a while
the prose is so efficient and clean. the characters are vivid, complex, natural. it's a difficult read in the sense that it is starkly real. this isn't the typical war novel as it's about people more than conflict--if that's possible. a must read for anyone that hopes to understand the experience of war, life, solitude, and isolation.
