Seller's Description:
Very good in Very good jacket. 436 pages. Oversized volume, measuring 11-1/2 inches by 8-1/4 inches. Name of previous owner written in ink inside front free endpaper. Number in ink inside front cover. DJ is in a bordered plastic sleeve. Profusely illustrated with black and white photographs. The chapter on "Traction in the North Country (pages 290-305) discusses trolleys in Canada. Early Toronto cars, for instance, were constructed with a removable right-hand side; when balmy summer weather arrived, side paneling was removed from the one side, open car running boards were fitted, and the longitudinal seating used during winter operation was replaced with transverse benches. The severity of winter weather in the north country introduced a number of difficult operating conditions for the Canadian traction systems. To maintain some degree of passenger comfort, Canadian trolleys tended to be somewhat heavier in construction and were usually better insulated. Perhaps because of the severe winter operating conditions, as well as the somewhat slower trend to private automobile ownership in Canada, Canadian traction systems survived considerably longer than most of their U.S. counterparts, and extensive abandonment of street railways did not begin until after the end of World War II.

The time of the Trolley is a look back at the era when the Trolley Car dominated the urban transportation scene. The book goes back to origins of the street railway, starting with horse cars and cable cars. It progress through the early experiments with electrical operation, to the maturation of the technology to the twilight of the era. The book is richly illustrated with literally hundreds of photos dating back to the 1800's. The book focuses mainly on Trolley Cars in the United States, but some coverage is included of these cars in Canada, Mexico and other locations around the world. This book is a fast paced overview of this bygone technology and era, and is a nice addition to the book collections of history lovers in general or "Trolley Fans" in particular. I highly recommend it.
