In 2006, Great Northern Books launched a new series of books under the title "Rediscovering Priestley" with the aim of bringing back into print the fiction work of one of the 20th century's greatest writers, J.B. Priestley. The first book in this series of beautifully produced collectors' editions was "Bright Day", which received accolades from some of the country's leading writers and political figures including Tony Benn, Margaret Drabble, Michael Foot, Beryl Bainbridge, Alan Bennett, Barry Cryer and many others. Not only was it a creative and critical success but also achieved high levels of sales through retail outlets across the country and online. This success is now to be repeated with the publication of a second title - also superbly designed, illustrated and bound - Priestley's first major non-fiction success, "The Good Companions", originally published in 1929. As with "Bright Day", this new book will contain biographical details, images and information on the music hall scene of the 1920s, to enable the reader to place the novel in its historical context." The Good Companions", will be eagerly sought after by all those who bought "Bright Day" as well as the many thousands of lovers of Priestley's work and appreciators of classic literature across the world.

Written in 1923, this novel is set in England and focuses on three main characters. Jess Oakroyd, a wokking class man in his early fifties who losses his job and leaves his unhappy home. His one joy in life was his daughter 'ar' Lily' who has emigrated to Canada leaving him to his harping wife and disrespectful son. Our next character is Inigo Jollifant, a bored school teacher who composes very catchy and good music, but sees himself as an essayist. When he's sacked from his job he hits the road. Our third main character is Elizabeth Trant, in her mid-thirties, who has been stuck at the Manor House in a small village caring for her ailing father while her sister has married a solicitor and moved to London and her brother has moved to India and is a judge. When Daddy dies, the contents of the house are auctioned and she gets an extra 600 pounds from an uncle. Deciding it's time she saw some life, she too hits the road. All have adventures on the way and they meet in a depressing little town where they hook up with a concert party troupe of singers, dancers and comics who have been stranded with no money. Trant takes over the troupe they travel across England providing us with a glimpse of what differences exist from region to region. This is a human drama novel exploring a, now long gone, way of live with humour, pathos, compassion, a dash of romance, and a sense of fun. There are many trials and problems but in the end all is well highly recommended.
