Seller's Description:
None. Very Good Indeed. A beautifully bound second edition of Bagster's 'Complete Angler'. Being the official eighth edition of the work, this is a profusely illustrated copy of the famous fishing work, which has retained its brightness. Being two parts in one as called for. In a lovely contemporary speckled calf binding. A second edition thus, being Bagster's second edition. Bibliographically, this work falls as the eighth edition of 'The complete angler' overall. The second Bagster edition has many lengthy improvements and additions by the British Museum's Sir Henry Ellis. He produced a fresh bibliography for this edition. This edition has been collated with the final edition published in Walton's life; the 1676 edition. Many errors have been collected. This volume sees the addition of many notes and corrections by Sir John Hawkins. Bagster notes to the advertisement of this edition that it boasts an index 'far more copious than has accompanied any former edition of the Complete Angler'. Loosely inserted is a tissue guard for every plate and vignette. Illustrated, with fifty illustrations total, comprising of twelve plates and thirty-eight vignettes. Two of the plates are sheets of music. To the list of plates it is stated that 'Unless where otherwise expressed, the whole of the plates have been engraved by Mr Philip Audinet; and the drawings of the fish were wholly by that artist'. For this edition new portraits have been added of Walton and Cotton, engraved from the original pictures, in addition to new portraits of the fish. 'The Compleat Angler' is Izaak Walton's best known work. It was edited and expanded by Walton for over a quarter of a century. The work is a celebration of fishing through prose and verse. The second part of this work is written by Walton's friend and fellow angler, Charles Cotton. A smart copy of this famous work, with bright engravings. In a full speckled calf binding. With gilt stamping to the spine. Externally, generally smart with just some minor loss to the head and tail of joints. Evidence of repair to the head and tail of front joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Small patches of worming to the bottom of the final few leaves and to the rear pastedown, to the bottom margin not affecting any text. Otherwise, just the odd spots to pages, heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed.
