The series is marked by a number of productive relationships between Joe and men well beyond retirement age. In The White Wing, Joe gets caught up in the heroic past of an old schooner and yearns to own it. He plans to move a house on it as a means of making the money to pay for it and its reconstruction. In the doing, Joe solves an old mystery and survives a wild boat adventure.
