The Calder Valley lies to the west of Halifax in West Yorkshire. Victorian visitors to the area were able to consult detailed guide books, such as Black's Guide to Yorkshire, to help them make the most of their stay. Black's was updated each year and included historical and geological information, where to stay, what to see and excursions to places of interest. This 35 page booklet combines text relating to Halifax from Black's Guide published in 1888, with photographs owned by the Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive. It is in three parts. The first comprises thirty photographs of Halifax and nearby villages, and Mytholmroyd, Sowerby Bridge and Hebden Bridge, mostly taken between 1890 and 1920. The second part is a visitor's guide to Halifax. The final part is a fascinating history and general description of Yorkshire. The text for parts two and three is reproduced from the 1888 guide-book. The Black's Guide text and the photographs complement each other and enable us to travel back in time to visit this delightful, historically rich area of Yorkshire, over one hundred years ago.
