Capon comments on everything from the marvels of the onion to the necessity of buying the best knife you can afford to the reasons for having a dinner party rather than a cocktail party. Through it all, he celebrates a world created with all sorts of colors, flavors and shapes which are "unnecessary" but very much to be loved.
