Barbara Hambly's men are the best! This intriguing mystery fantasy revolves around an insane wizard (well, maybe), the sexy young soldier who's tracking him, and a very confused computer programmer who's out of her depth and out of her world! The story starts out slow and takes its time creating the Empire of Ferryth until you know it like your own neighborhood. It's a very medieval place; full of sorcerors, merchants, peasants, and church inquisitors. Enter our small troupe, none of whom trust the others, but all of whom are forced to rely on each other to stop the deadly evil pervading the land. Antryg is the perfect antihero, a haunted figure who'd really much prefer some peace and quiet back in the Silent Tower where he'd been imprisoned. But the Empire needs him (even though they don't know it and are hunting him down), as well as his two new "friends". Because without the 3 of them, not just Ferryth, but our world as well, is doomed. This is not only a great action story, but one of my favorite love stories. A note to the wise: don't start this book without first buying the sequel, "The Silicon Mage." "The Silent Tower" ends in the middle of the story.
