This book is well written and very readable. It recounts the history of Orwell and Waugh and their general outlook on life very well. And it contains a fairly comprehensive review of their writings. A little more detail, if it is available, on why Orwell made the choices he made early in his life would add some clarity, perhaps, as to why Orwell developed the world view he had.
The author's conclusion seems to me to be a little forced. I don't know if an expansion of his reasons for his conclusion might have helped support his argument; certainly there was room for some expansion. But as it stands, the case that the two men who are seemingly so different in outlook and style are essentially 'The Same Man,' though plausible from the evidence, as far as it goes, just does not seem that well supported.
This book is worth reading, however, for anyone who is interested in either or both of these two authors--inarguably two of the more important and accomplished literary figures of 20th Century Great Britain. And Orwell, or course, through his books 'Animal Farm' and 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' gained enormous readership in the United States--as we know, the terms 'Big Brother,' made famous in 'Nineteen Eight-Four,' and 'Orwellian,' after Orwell, are today common currency in the English Language, especially in the United States and Great Britain.
The author's conclusion certainly provides food for thought and a good staring point for those who wish to explore the author's thesis about these two men further.
