She knew she should have time enough and to spare in those still longer night-watches when oblivion would refuse to come at her bidding, and all the mocking ghosts of the dead past, all the miserable presentiments of the menacing future, which she managed after a fashion to exorcise and keep at bay during daylight hours, would crowd upon her unsleeping vision.
